Funarë – A natural treasure
Albania is one of the most vulnerable Western Balkans countries to the changing climate. It is estimated that summer rainfalls will decline by about 10% by 2020 and 20% by 2050. The Municipality of Elbasan has been particularly vulnerable to climate induced risks in recent years. URI’s latest project “Building climate resilience of forests through ecosystem-based adaptation” funded by German government through GIZ Albania, addresses urgent climate change adaptation needs of vulnerable communities living around forests by implementing ecosystem-based adaptation interventions. The selected site is the Funarë Administrative Unit, in the municipality of Elbasan, a natural treasure surrounded by forests mainly oak and pine, with a spectacular view and great touristic opportunities.
