Route 1: Church of Saint Michael and Lekli Castle

Begin your journey at the Church of Saint Michael, a cultural monument dating back to the 18th century. Route 2: Ali Pasha’s Aqueduct

Step into the footsteps of Ali Pasha Tepelena as you embark on a journey along the Benca River. Begin your adventure at the historic Burg Bridge and follow the path created during Ali Pasha’s reign. Discover hidden sources of drinking water and take moments to rest by the river’s edge.

As you approach Ali Pasha’s aqueduct, marvel at this incredible feat of engineering. Built to bring water to the fortress of Tepelena, the aqueduct stands as a testament to the region’s rich history. Continue your journey towards Teqeja e Bênça, a sacred site dating back to 1925.

Route 3: Nivica Waterfall

Prepare for a breathtaking adventure as you journey through the heart of Nivica village. Begin your hike from the village center and traverse a moderately difficult path leading to the spectacular waterfall nestled in the canyons below.

Along the way, you’ll pass by the ruins of Nivica Castle, a historical gem dating back to the 4th-2nd century BC. Follow the orientation signs and descend into the open path, meandering downhill until you reach the top of the waterfall. Take a moment to bask in the beauty of the natural pool created by the continuous water flows.

Cross the stone bridge and discover the enchanting “Vajza” Cave, a natural rock formation just a minute’s walk from the waterfall. On your return journey, indulge in the warm hospitality of the local guesthouses, offering delightful meals and cozy lodgings.

Route 4: Peshtura Waterfall

Embark on an unforgettable journey from the center of Progonat village, the heart of upper Kurveles. Surrounded by a crown of mountains and caressed by the west winds, Progonat is a settlement steeped in pre-Christian and early Christian history.

As you descend into the canyon, prepare to be awestruck by the majestic Peshtura Waterfall. With a height of approximately 400 meters, this natural wonder creates a dazzling display of rainbow colors as the water cascades down from the Gurra Se Progonati Stream.

Explore the nearby Mother of Water Cave, a karst cave formed in Upper Cretaceous limestone, and be captivated by its intricate labyrinth of branches, water wells, and rare concretions. The Rock Hole and Cave of Kasari offer even more geological wonders for the intrepid explorer.

Job description

The Urban Research Institute is excited to announce a contest called “Discover Kukës” for young writers, which is part of the ECOROUTES project. The aim of this competition is to motivate and encourage young writers to discover the beauty of Kukës and express their unique perspectives about it. This contest is open to anyone aged 18 to 33 years old who has a strong connection to Kukës and is passionate about history, culture, traditions, or landmarks. It is an opportunity to showcase writing skills and celebrate the diversity of Kukës.

The contest requires participants to create 10 short novels that highlight local features such as territory, cultural heritage, and traditions. The selected works will be included in a book that contains 20 novels, all written by young writers from Albania and Kosovo. The book will be published and distributed across the Programme area.

The “Discover Kukës” call for applications will be open until May 31, 2023.*

During the conference, participants were presented with a range of good practices that have been identified in the Preza, Marikaj, and Ndroq areas. These practices were designed to ensure that the olive oil produced in the region is of the highest quality and is produced sustainably. Through these presentations, more than 50 participants had the opportunity to learn about the best national and regional practices for olive oil production.

The workshop provided an opportunity for olive oil producers, experts, and enthusiasts to come together and share their experiences and knowledge. The discussions and presentations focused on the importance of preserving the ancient olive orchards of the region, which have been cultivated for centuries and represent an important cultural and historical heritage.

Overall, the workshop was a valuable opportunity for participants to learn about the best practices for olive oil production in the area, to share their experiences and knowledge, and to contribute to the sustainable development of the region.

The Progonat-Peshtura Waterfall trail is a 6-kilometer hike that takes visitors through stunning natural scenery, including a series of waterfalls and pools, such as the breathtaking Peshtura Waterfall, where visitors can swim in the crystal-clear waters or simply take in the stunning view. Along the way, visitors can learn about the traditional way of life in the region and visit an artisanal cheese factory.

Another route created by the project is the Ali Pasha’s Aqueduct trail, a 4-kilometer hike that follows the path of an ancient aqueduct built by Ali Pashë Tepelena. Along the way, visitors can admire the stunning views of the Vjosa River and the surrounding mountains, and explore the remains of ancient fortifications and settlements. The trail’s architectural highlight is the Aqueduct Bridge, an impressive feat of engineering that is still in use today.

The Saint Michael Church – Lekli Castle trail is a 1-kilometer hike that takes visitors through the stunning Albanian countryside, passing by traditional stone houses, olive groves, and vineyards. The trail leads to the impressive ruins of Lekli Castle, an ancient fortress that played a significant role in the region’s history. Visitors can also explore the nearby Saint Michael Church, which dates back to the 14th century and features stunning frescoes and intricate carvings, and the ruins of Saint Athanas Church.

Finally, the Nivica Waterfall trail is a 1,5-kilometer trail that takes visitors through a beautiful forest, passing by streams and traditional stone houses. The trail leads to the stunning Guva Waterfall, which cascades down a series of rock formations into a crystal-clear pool below. Visitors can swim in the cool waters and explore the surrounding area. This route offers visitors a chance to experience the region’s natural beauty up close, as well as learn about its traditional way of life.

URI is searching for international consultancy on the implementation of the service: “Feasibility evaluation of the implementation in Albania of the atmospheric-based GHG emissions estimation and verification method”.
The service is a component of the Green Climate Fund Readiness and Preparatory Support Project: “Climate Change Measurement, Reporting and Verification System of Albania: Emissions and Mitigation”, under implementation from URI since October 2022, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment of Albania.
